The third and last appearance of Mr. Moneypenny at the Basement. This doesn’t mean we will never see him again. Oh, no. It is the last time he will come to the staalplaat basement. After the applause has died down, staalplaat will leave.

Special Guest, directly from Chevy Chase (USA): Violet. It is the first show of Jeff Surak, a veteran of American lyrical noise music, in Berlin. Not to be missed if you are a fan of multi layered drones mixed with destructed musique concrete.

The last evening at the Rote Salon for us. This edition we have invited Peter Cusack and Lloyd Dunn, two sound artists who are firmly rooted in the last century, and both have arrived at the use of field recordings in a very special way. While Lloyd Dunn’s method is one of collage and carefully composing, (listen to his fantastic filecasts on Nula) Peter Cusack combines the act of story telling with his recordings.

Staalplaat, invited by one of the curators at the Volksbühne, would set up a series of shows at der Rote Salon in the season 2010-2011. The Volksbühne Board of Directors, if there is any, inspired by the dramatic changes in Banana Republics all over the world, decided to stop our series. There are still two evenings left.

This man is Isaac Bashevis Singer, one of the greatest writers of last century.

And this picture shows the entrance to der Rote Salon, kind of..

Radboud Mens and John Grzinich are the two actors this evening, saturday 18. Come at 21.00 to see how a room of pluche and purist dreams will come alive by sounds as old as Pythagoras.

Both will use strings. Strings as in guitar strings and not as in lady’s pants. If you want to dream about that, you have to come after 24.00 when der Rote Salon opens its doors to Disco Rostock.

Mr. Mens and Mr. Grznich will not play a guitar as rock stars do. But…Who knows?

Yes, indeed who knows. Radboud Mens will play three guitars at the same time, without touching them. John Grzinich will play a very long string which is connected from side to side. Both, Mr. Mens and Mr. Grzinich will make the room sing. They are open to questions after the shows.

28 – 30 July: Blind Tape Quartets

Three days in a row,on thursday, friday and saturday, from 18.00 onwards, musicians and non – musicians are invited to join the Blind Tape Quartets.

Let’s explain this step by step.

Blind Tapes is the label of Luka Ivanovic ( aka Lukatoyboy). Blind Tape Quartets is a series of releases on this label.

The name is Blind Tape Quartets because a four track recorder is used to prepare the master tape.

Four tracks for four artists who will be united on this tape. Four artists who don’t know what will be on the other track. Four artists who will record their music onto the recorder as if they are playing in a quartet.

The four track recorder will be set up in the basement of Staalplaat store.

Any one who has a device, an instrument, an object, an idea, a voice can come and have 10 seconds to 10 minutes space to fill on the recorder.

We provide the cable and the various ways of recording by microphone onto the 4track.

Once the master tape is full, a mix will be made on a blank cassette, or on one of my cassettes full of Neue Türkische Kunst. Participating artists can keep this cassette. These cassettes are a release by Blind Tapes.

Everyone can come. Just walk in. I don’t expect long waiting lines.

An extended version of Blind Tape Quartets will be presented as a kind of workshop /demostration on the Tales for Tapes evening on 3. August at Altes Finanzamt.

So,

On 28, 29 or 30 July you can come and join the Blind Tape Quartet.

A four track to record 10 seconds up to 10 minutes of your sounds will be waiting for you in the basement of Staalplaat store.

Cables and microphones and blank cassettes are provided for.

Record as you come, no registration or reservation needed.

On the 25th of June, Guillaume and his petit mignon will celebrate the opening of a new exhibition. And if you are not familiar with the style, you really should get some new friends who can tell you.

The exhibition is called “Dickes Wasser”, put together by the Bambam Collective

The exhibition will come with a lot of extra’s, and of course the usual wall paper that makes the shop so funky, o yeah, baby, baby.

Those who feel like doing something else right now, should save their best bits for the shows in the basement….
